bizSAFE Star: what it actually means for an owner engaging a contractor

bizSAFE Star is more than a logo on a website. Here's what the audit covers — and why it should matter to the person paying the invoice.

bizSAFE Star is the top tier of the Workplace Safety and Health Council's contractor accreditation programme. It's issued after an independent audit of the company's WSH management system — not a self-declared certificate.

What the auditor actually checks

Risk assessment procedures, incident reporting flow, worker training records, PPE issuance and inspection logs, subcontractor management, and top-management commitment. It's a document-heavy audit — a contractor either has the system in place, or they don't.

Why it matters for owners

Under the WSH Act, the owner and main-contractor share liability for site incidents. Engaging a bizSAFE Star contractor is one of the cleanest ways to demonstrate reasonable due diligence.
